Bishop Steven Biegler is a native of Timber Lake, S.D. He has six brothers and six sisters. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Rapid City on July 9, 1993, and he was ordained and installed as the Bishop of Cheyenne on June 5, 2017.
He earned a BA in Philosophy from St. Mary’s College while a seminarian at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minnesota (1986-1989). He also earned a Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University while a seminarian at the North American College in Rome (1989-1993). Later he completed a Licentiate of Sacred Theology from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome (2006-2007).
His priestly ministry included ministry for parishes in Bonesteel, Fairfax, and Ponca Creek (1994-1996); McLaughlin, McIntosh, Wakpala, Bullhead, Kenel, and Watauga (1996-2003); Piedmont (2011-2016); Cathedral, Rapid City, and Hermosa (1993, 2007-2011, 2016-2017). Also, he was the Director of Pastoral Formation and Apostolic Works at the North American College in Rome (2003-2006), and the chaplain of the Rapid City Catholic Schools and the S.D. School of Mines Newman Club (2007-2010). He served as the Vicar General (2013-2017) and as the Diocesan Administrator of Diocese of Rapid City (2010-2011).
Currently, he serves on the USCCB Subcommittee on the Translation of Scripture Texts.
